Time the finale

A 500-gram cake runs 30 to 60 seconds. Light the finale at 11:59:15 and it peaks at midnight. Have a phone showing the actual time, not the TV, which is often delayed.

Cold-weather tips

Fuses light slower in cold, damp air. Keep fireworks in the house until an hour before you shoot, and use a torch lighter instead of a punk. Gloves on, except for the hand that lights. Our family safety tips apply at midnight too.

03

Think about the neighbors

Midnight is loud by definition, but a 10-minute show that ends by 12:10 keeps the peace. Favor color and brocade over salutes if you are close to houses.

And make sure you are somewhere fireworks are allowed: most North Texas cities ban them. See where you can shoot in Collin County and Texas fireworks laws.
