Where to Shoot Near Fort Worth

Short version: not inside Fort Worth, Keller or most of the nearby cities. Families around north Fort Worth who shoot do it on private land in unincorporated Tarrant or Denton County. Here is what the cities and counties say, with links so you can check for yourself.

01

Inside city limits: no

Fort Worth's fire code prohibits the possession, manufacture, storage, sale, handling and use of fireworks in the city, and the city takes non-emergency reports of illegal fireworks online or through the MyFW app. For a fire, an injury or any other emergency, call 9-1-1. (City of Fort Worth)

Keller's fire code uses the same rule: possession, manufacture, storage, sale, handling and use of fireworks are prohibited, apart from approved displays. (City of Keller fire code amendments)

In southern Denton County, Roanoke, Justin, Northlake, Argyle and Trophy Club all prohibit the sale, possession or use of fireworks inside their limits. Some larger cities can also ban possession and use up to 5,000 feet past the city line, so if you are close to any city, check its rules for that land. (Denton Record-Chronicle)

Most other cities in the area, including Haslet, Saginaw, Watauga and North Richland Hills, have their own ordinances. If you live in or near a city, check its current rules before you buy.

02

Unincorporated Tarrant and Denton County: yes, with limits

The Tarrant County Fire Marshal says the only place to light fireworks in unincorporated Tarrant County is on property you own, or on someone else's property with the owner's permission. (Tarrant County Fire Marshal)

Denton County says the same for its unincorporated areas, and adds that this does not override a city's power to regulate fireworks within 5,000 feet of its limits. Fireworks are also illegal on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers property, which includes most parks and land around Lake Lewisville and Lake Ray Roberts. Violations can bring a fine of up to $500 each. (Denton County Fire Marshal)

State law applies everywhere: nothing within 600 feet of a church, hospital, school or licensed child care center without written permission, and nothing within 100 feet of a place where fireworks are sold or where flammable liquids or gases are stored and dispensed. The rest is in our Texas fireworks laws guide.

03

Not at our stores

You cannot light fireworks at any NyTex store or in its parking lot. State law bars lighting within 100 feet of a place that sells fireworks, and our lots are private property. Take everything home, or to private land where it is legal, before you light anything.

04

Drought orders and burn bans

When the drought index is high, the county commissioners court can restrict "skyrockets with sticks" and "missiles with fins" in unincorporated areas; the order has to be adopted by December 15 for New Year's and by June 15 for the Fourth of July. (Tex. Local Gov't Code 352.051)

A county burn ban is a separate order, so check both. For a fireworks order, see the Tarrant County or Denton County fire marshal; for burn bans, see the Texas A&M Forest Service's daily burn ban map. Or call us and we will tell you what we know.
