The Basics of Artillery Shells

Artillery shells, also known as "ball shells" or "canister shells," stand out as some of the most captivating fireworks on the market. These fireworks consist of at least one tube and at least 6 shells. They create mesmerizing bursts of colors, a loud boom when launched, some whistle, some crackle, some have a tail and when they explode you are treated to patterns that mirror professional displays. What makes artillery shells exciting is their reloadable nature, allowing you to use the firing tube over and over for multiple shells.

At NyTex Fireworks, Artillery Shells are one of our most popular styles of firework. That's why we continue to carry more and more varieties and brands! If you have never experience this type of firework you are in for a treat. How to light them and how they work can be a little confusing, so here is a guide that will help clear up any confusion.

Lighting Artillery Shells: A Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Prepare Your Launch Area: Clear the launch area of any debris or flammable materials. Confirm that your launch tubes are stable and properly positioned. They should fire straight up and be clear of trees or any obstructions. Artillery shells can go as high as 150 feet so make sure you are clear. You should be positioned at least 50 feet from your audience.

  2. Organize Your Artillery Shells & Tube: Arrange your artillery shells in a safe and accessible manner, ensuring they are stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Ensure that you only use the shells in the Tube that they were packaged with. Tubes and shells come in different sizes and the shells need the right size tube to get the appropriate "lift" when fired.

  3. Load the Shell: After choosing the shell you would like to shoot, place it in the tube such that the fuse can freely go up and out of the top of tube. Your shell should be at the bottom of the tube and the fuse should clearly be positioned above the tube. If the fuse is below the top of the fuse your shell is likely upside down and will not fire properly. Some shells are labeled with top and bottom for convenience.

  4. Choose Your Ignition Source: Choose a quality, extended-reach lighter or an electric firing system to ignite your artillery shells. This maintains a safe distance and enhances your control over the launch. We recommend wind-proof lighters.

  5. Light One Shell at a Time: For optimal safety and control, light only one artillery shell at a time. This ensures you can fully appreciate and enjoy each unique display.

  6. Light at the Fuse Base: Ignite the artillery shell at the base of the fuse, using your chosen ignition source. Quickly turn and run away from the tube ensuring it does not fall over. You should aim to be at least 35 feet away before it ignites the shell.

  7. Observe the Display: Now turn and watch! Watch as the artillery shell ascends into the night sky, creating a stunning spectacle of colors and patterns. Be captivated by the beauty and magic unfolding in the nights sky.

  8. Tubes: After shooting all of your shells be careful to ensure your tube is not hot. If it is, let it rest for a few minutes before handling. Cardboard and PVC tubes should be disposed after shooting. Although they may look normal, these tubes are not constructed in a way to handle more shells than they are packaged with. HDPE Tubes can be stored for use during the next shoot.
